LUMBINI

LUMBINI
In the plains south of the first foothills of the churia range lies Lumbini, birthplace of Gautam, the Lord Buddha. Lumbini is a sacred place for Buddhists from all over the world, standing on an equal footing with holy places sacred to other world religions. A veteran Asian traveller and author of several books writes, 'As millions of Christians look to Jerusalem for inspiration, as millions of Muslims turn to Mecca, so do three hundred million Buddhists see in the sacred Kingdom of Nepal, a pillar left by the great Emperor Ashoka to mark the site where Buddha was born.

(a) The Ashokan Pillar

In 1895, a German archaeologist and a Nepalese General while wandering about the foothills of the Churia range, discovered a massive stone pillar erected by Emperor Ashoka in 250 B.C. to pay homage to the birthplace of Buddha. It is said that the Indian Emperor visited Lumbini Garden in the twentieth year of his coronation.

The stone pillar bears the following inscription: King Piyadasi, beloved of the gods, having been anointed twenty years, came himself and worshipful one was born here. The village of Lumbini has been made free of taxes and a recipient of wealth.

(b) The Temple of Maya Devi

The next important shrine in Lumbini is the image of Maya Devi, containing a stone relief depicting the birth scene of Siddhartha Gautam. The bas-relief shows Maya Devi supporting herself by holding on to a branch of a sal tree, and the newborn figures are engaged in the act of pouring water and lotuses from the heavens. The Maya Devi shrine the begin worshipped by both Hindus and Buddhists since the beginning of the Christian era.

To the south of the Maya Devi shrine is the famous sacred pool of 'Puskarani' , believed to be the same sacred pool in which queen Maya Devi bathed just before giving birth. It is also believed to be the pool where the infant was given his first purification bath. The structure consists of three projecting terraces in descending order and is constructed of fine brick masonry.

(c) Buddhist Monasteries

New Buddhist monasteries have been built into the surrounding complex of Lumbini. The designs of these monasteries are modern. There are also some ruined walls, a restored rectangular pond and some mounds. Archaeological excavations under taken in Lumbini have revealed the sanctum-sanctum the exact spot where the Lord was born, the brick foundations of a monastery, some small votive stupas and large plinths. A large number of historical artifacts have also been unearthed in the surrounding area. These archaeological finds are briefly described in the section on culture.

For visitors planning to stay overnight in Lumbini, there are good facilities for food and accommodation. Lumbini is only a short distance away from the town of Siddharthanagar where there is an airport connected by regular flights from the capital. One can also approach Lumbini by road from Pokhara or Kathmandu via Narayanghat.

An international effort is currently underway to turn Lumbini into a world pilgrimage and tourist site. Massive rehabilitation temple of Maya Devi is being totally rebuilt. Several nations are also constructing monasteries reflecting their respective architecture at Lumbine. The recent excavation of a stone placed by Emperor Ashoka to mark the exact birthplace of the Buddha has been hailed as the greatest archaeological discovery at Lumbini.

BHAGAVATI TEMPLE

BHAGAVATI TEMPLE
The temple was built long before the conquest of Kathmandu. Apparently King Jagajjaya Malla(1722-36) built it and named it Mahipatindreswar in memory of his grandfather Mahipatindre Malla. The image of Mahiatindra Narayan was subsequently stolen in 1766, and the shrine was empty when King Prithvi Naryan Shah entered the city in 1768. Since Prithvi Narayan Shah had with him the image of Bhagavati, it was appropriate for him to place it in this empty sanctuary close to the Palace.

In April each year it is taken on a visit back to Nuwakot, some fifty seven kilometers north of Kathmandu and returned a few days later. When one steps back some distance to study it the Bhagavati temple is uncommonly attractive, this beauty is further enhanced by the golden roofs on the upper two storeys.

KASTA MANDAP

KASTA MANDAP
Known locally as Aaru Sattal, this huge, open temple has a long history. Popular legend has it that during King Laxmi Narsingh's time Kalpa Briksha came to see the chariot festival of Machchhendranath, where he was recognised by one of the priests. The priest sized him and refused to release him until he promised to give a tree from whose wood a rest house could be built. Kalpa Briksha made the promise, and so he was released. Four days later, a huge Sal tree was delivered. with the king's remission, the Kastha Mandap was built from the wood of this single tree; the name Kathmandu was derived from Kastha Mandap.

Three-storey Kastha Mandap has an open ground floor, underlining its original purpose as a public building. The decorations and carvings added over the years have greatly enhanced the original design, bringing it closer to the appearance of a shrine. The central image in Kasta Mandap is of the saint Gorakhanath. At each of the four corners is an image of Ganesh, the elephant headed god.

MUL CHOWK(PATAN)

MUL CHOWK
Mul Chowk was the scene of almost all the truly important functions of the Malla period. Religious rites of all descriptions, royal weddings, the investiture of the crown prince as well as the coronation of all the Malla kings took place here. According to the Bhasha Vamsavali, Mul chowk was built by Mahendra Malla in 564 while he was building the great Taleju Temle; Bhaskar Malla then rebuilt in 1709 giving it its present appearance.

Mul Chowk is shaped very much like a vihar or Buddhist monastery, with a square courtyard surrounded by a two-storeyed quadrangle. The southern wing of the quadrangle is by far the most important, housing a second and smaller temple of Taleju. On the ground floor of the three wings of the quadrangle there are large, open verandas. In the centre of the courtyard is a low post set in the ground where animals are sacrificed at Dashain festival. At this time, Taleju is worshipped within the small temple according to secret rites. The temple is on the south side of Mul chowk, facing north. To the right and left of its golden door, life-sized images of Ganga and Jamuna stand in poses of graceful service. Above the door, an impressive half moon panel called a torana carries in its central place of the honor an image of goddess Taleju.

In addition to the above-mentioned courtyards and temples of the Hanuman Dhoka complex, there are a number of other interesting and historic temples in the vicinity.

On the south side, where the main door is found, there are large stone images of men and beasts, each one a powerful protecting force. At the top, on the final stage of the plinth, is a finely wrought bell on either side of the main door of the temple, one erected by Pratap Malla in 1654 and one by Bhaskar Malla in 1714. BASANTAPUR CHOWK

BASANTAPUR CHOWK
At the south-east corner of the Nasal chowk is and doorway through which one can pass into Basantaur chowk. During the time of King Prithivi Naryan Shah, the Shah kings moved from the old quarters, formely occupied by the Malla Kings, into the central countyard Palace. While the woodcarving in the central courtyard are an especially outstanding feature, the whole building is of equal historic value to the Nepalese.
The nine-storey Palace of Prithivi Naryan Shan, called the Basantapur Tower, is on the south-west of the quadrangle. The tower is on the south-east corner is known as the Lalitpur Tower. Bhaktpur Tower is on the north-east corner, whilw Kirtipur Tower is on the north-west.
Lalitpur Tower two storeys above the roofs the quadrangle. The view from the windows of these tower is marvellous, and when lavish gardens were laid out directly below, as they once were, its charm must have been even more enhanced. Bhaktapur Tower also rises two storeys above the general level of the quadrangle. It too looked out over the gardens, but a more special attraction lies in its unobstructed view of the great Temple of Taleju that lies directly to the north. The Kirtipur Tower has its own special fascination. The copper roof of this tower is of most usual design and complexity and is unpatalleled in Nepalese architecture. From where the inspiration for the design was derived is as unknown as the names of the artisans who contrived it, but it design provided a perfect counterpoint to the towers that lie beyond it. Matching the Lalitur and Kirtipur Towers in height, the Kirtipur Tower offers a clear view into the courtyard of Nasal chowk and also across the roofs to Degutaleju temple and Jagannath temple in the Hanuman Dhoka area.
The Basantapur Palace is a work of art in its own right, known for its finely carved roof struts, excellent windows, and the poetry of roof rising upon roof.
